I've named this new practice method "nibbles" and it is working for me! Lots of variety, break for a minute or two (no longer) now and then--all the things outlined in kcole's thread about motor skills learning. Not only am I playing the songs better sooner, but I am memorizing them faster. Lots faster. I think "nibbles" is appropriate because I can eat a lot more if I graze than if I sit down to a big meal. Which is why I try not to graze!
I'm back to the JD book and working in the second half. I love the Home on the Range arrangement and having fun with it. I am also just about done with the second Blackberry Blossom arrangement, and I like how it's shaping up. I am amazed at how much faster I can work the fingerboard than just a couple of months ago. Memory helps a great deal with that. But I have a dilemma.
The banjo I play most, Big Banjo, is a Deering Intermediate that was given to me by a friend who just let it sit in the closet for 20 years or so. I refused it as a gift outright, but agreed to babysit it and play it. I would really like to have spikes installed, but it's not my banjo to alter. And since my friend is out of touch recently... I am sort of at a standstill. I cannot, in good conscience, let anyone drill holes into the neck without knowing it's OK first. I guess I will try a fifth string capo and see how that works. I will probably try the bic pen top method first and go from there.
Cold and snowy in the Poconos, so I am hunkered in and got a lot of playing time in today. I know I have work heading down the pipeline soon, so I am getting in as much picking as possible while I can. The work, and the new work method, shows.
