I've been sewing pretty seriously since I was about 12. I can make just about anything, an dhave--from baby clothes to luggage. I taught quilting for a couple of years, but I really haven't done much with a needle and thread for the last 5 or 6 years. The kiddo wanted a quilt for her dorm room, made of old t-shirts she got for events she participated in or places she visited over the years. So I whipped up the top last week (pic on my pics page) and got the borders and binding done this week. (no pics because she's sleeping under it right now.) If I have one real sewing talent, it's handwork. Even though I prefer to work on the machine, I have to admit that my handwork is about close to textbook perfect. I prefer to bind my quilts by hand; I think they lay flatter, corner better and look more professional. Now, sewing a binding on a quilt by hand is a long distance to cover one stitch at a time. Let's do the arithmetic...about 320 or so inches. But I found as I sat there with my hot-pink granny glasses and thimble that I was calm, and relaxed, in that zen-like zone you hit when you're doing something you are skilled at and enjoy. I realized that I missed that creative process, and craftsmanship necessary to realize that process. So, I've decided to do a little more of it this fall. Christmas is coming, and I have some great ideas for gifts from my needle.
Maybe one day I will hit that zone with my banjo. I think I get a hint of what it might feel like now and then. I often dream about that feeling. It's the journey's end, I think. And in reality, I don't want the journey to end. Banjo can carry you a very long way.
