Let me tell you a short story about my Nechville experience. I had Tom custom build me a Classic with the light weight wood tonering, I got the banjo in 3 months just as he said{ good to his word} I recived it and was taking the resonator off to tighten the head a little and the gloss on it is so fine and slick , it slipped off of my lap when I lifted the banjo out and hit my banjo stand and put a dent in my sidewall, I was sick, as many of you know how I keep my banjos. I tried a old trick on lifting the laquer back up with a towel and a iron, I made it worse, I wanted to throw up, I called Tom and told him what I did and he said , I give you credit for trying, send it to me and we will fix it, He did exactly that and it looks like it never happened and sent it back to me right quick, now thats customer service and this banjo Rocks, you wouldn't believe it doesn't have a conventional tonering, I wanted to have it back in time for Nash Camp but it got here the day after I left, I wanted the folks to see what kind of machine this baby is, but don't be hesitant to do business with Tom, He , his staff and his banjos are Super great, Thanks Tom and your staff. I'd go buy them myself, but I'm so busy with feeding starving children, helping old ladies across the street, building houses for the poor, discovering new subatomic particles, and my cancer research that I simply don't have the time or money to get my own. When you send those banjos I'll put everything on hold though to make sure I give you an honest and critical analysis of the instruments. I wouldn't want you to think I was just trying to get the banjos that I have wanted for quite a while for nothing.

I expect to see those on my step soon (keeping my fingers crossed)

Tom, I bought a Nechville Phantom in '07 from Turtle Hill and absolutely love it. Of all my banjos, the Nechville is the easiest to play. I have never adjusted it, haven't had to. But, I wouldn't know what to do anyway! Thanks for a great sounding and beautiful banjo.

If you are happy with the way it sounds, you probably would want to leave it alone. BUT, should you decide to make some adjustments, I suggest you visit our web site and click on "Banjo Tips". There you will find videos on adjusting the neck, and adjustments you can make to the head, tailpiece, etc.

The way these puppy's are built, They will never wear out. Mine will probably last the rest of My Life, Witch I hope is a long time? I'm surprised I lasted this long! When I'm gone, I have two adult Grand Son's,, They can argue over who gets it.. This banjo still amazes Me, last week at the K.C. Jam, I lossened the two lugs, I only use two, I put My Classic on the pool table, took out the two wrenches, and loosened the head, about an inch turn, Picked it for a little bit, decided it was a little to loose so I tightened it about 1/2 an inch, this was when 6 people who had never seen a Nechville adjustment before , some had never seen a Nechville at all. looked on,, One of the guys who sponsers the Jam, asked Last night what My Nechville weighed?? He is like Me,, having bad back trouble, I told Him, on My Digital bathroom scales, It weighed 7 lbs', He has an old Gibson, and a newer Sierra, but wants something lighter, I hope He will choose' Nechville?? I think next Thurs. night, I'll let Him take Mine Home, If He wants to, and play it for a week, I think He will be convinced?

Thanks Lee, You're my favorite post-er, Glad you like the banjo, If everyone just bought one of them, you could just relax and pick because they'd see for themselves, but as it is, I think people generally like to hear from you and your adventures with the banjo.
I'm getting more inquiries on the Atlas openback, and people want to hear a sound clip. I'm scared to do it because I don't clawhammer, (besides I'm out of Atlas stock right now). We were counting on Zepp to post a video, who has one now (and likes it), but he's been tending to personal issues and hasn't recorded it yet. We recently sent one to Kathy Fink who said (like you) she was surprised at the clarity and volume from an all wooden pot. She and others have commented about it having a nice solidness about it, and a pure tone. Muffled or thumpy would not describe the way I set them up. I use the same tailpiece as on my other Nechville banjos, and with a Renaissance Head and Flux neck connection it gives a note with a lot of body and fullness, but also has the power to give definition to each note. I think with some variation due to playing technique, these general qualities will be evidenced in eventual recordings that come out.

I'm planning on picking up a Nechville Phantom, or a Stealth.. There are appealing things about both of them to me.. I've never played a stealth.. but I played with a phantom at Janet Davis a while back and loved it..


My buying decision will be based on which one I can find a GREAT deal on 1st...

But are there any of you guys that have played both instruments?? Any advice for me?

Yeah, I thought I remembered that banjo even cheaper before it was relisted. I think that banjo sells new for around $3700. So, he may need to list it closer to $2500 to get some bids in this economy. I'm tempted....

I have been meaning to post about something and this seems the perfect spot.
I went to the IBMA this year and after listening to tons of acts I got to hear plenty of banjos while there.

First, I'm a banjo player that is very, very traditional. I like the old school sound, the old school way of playing, nothing too progressive at all. I know, need to open up, but at this stage in my banjo learnin, this is where I'm at.

My very limited exposure to Nechville through recordings has been ok, nothing really made me say woah! But that's the case with most banjos to me. I like a certain tone and I can't help it :(

Anyway, two banjos caught my ear while listening to all those groups at the IBMA.

First, Sonny Osbourne gave, loaned, something, but he gave a guy in a group one of his Chiefs to play and it was very nice sounding! He told me later it was a new banjo so I'd love to hear it after it has some time spent on it! Best one I heard while there. Not that the others were bad, just different.

The second best I heard I was so far away I couldn't tell what it was, but after the guy took a break and the tone was there, I grabbed my daughter's camera and zoomed in, much to my surprise, tunneled 5th string! :) Very happy to see and hear that banjo.

I don't know who it was, I did hit record on the camera so that I could grab a little bit of the group so that I could identify later so you guys would know who it is. Problem is I haven't downloaded and sorted through all the stuff she took pictures of. Got the pictures of Cia, and a few others off for her but that's about it, on the to do list...

In conclusion, I have to say, I was very impressed with the sound of that Nechville, I am now interested and will pay more attention. I guess I was guilty of assuming that a high tech banjo equaled a high tech player and a high tech sound of a player running scales up the neck and I really wasn't interested. So now I am and I will have to try one of your banjos out next time I get the chance! :) Sounded great!

I had to share this one. I had been he-hawing back and forth in getting a Nechville for years, and have recently been talking to Tom about getting one.

A few weeks back, on a Monday night I was bored so drove to only little jam session I know about on Mondays, at a little church about 20 miles from me, in Moore, SC.

Lo and behold, in this tiny church are a bunch of old timers, let's just say I go more for the spirit of the place than the music, but I enjoy both...

There were already two banjoists there. One was playing an ODE, the nice gold and engraved one, and the other was playing, guess what, a Nechville!

I emailed Tom that night and told him the banjo gods were messing with me

...not a bad thing, at all....

So now I have a Nechville on order and have been getting great input from some of the BHO folks here:

The Mahogany Phantom is a Mahogany Midnight Phantom with custom rosewood fingerboard and added dot inlay. It is a new addition to the Nechville Inventory, so not on the website. The neck is like new, but refurbished.

This will be short, gettin late, For You people who have never met Tom Nechville, You should, Even if You don't think You like nechville banjo's, It's worth it just to meet Tom, He is such a Freat Guy, Friendly,, helpfull,, funny,, Very knowledgable,, he has forgot more about banjo's than some people will ever know, I got there an hour late, had a great crowd, Al Price was there helping Tom, we were so busy, I forgot to ask Al to pick a tune, sorry Al. I picked just a little bit on 11 banjo's, They all sounded great, I first thought the ones with the bronze tone rings had just a hair more edge to them, But not really noticable, toward the last I picked up a non bronze ring, kinda different lookin, when I playd that one, It had the absolute BEST Sound of all,, It was the One with The Rosewood/Titanium Tone Ring, later on thats the on I want to get, although Tom Took some releif out of My neck,, put on a White Remo head,, and got it nice and tight, and it comes really close to that Rosewood/ Titanium,, It will do good for Me very well tell I can get that other one, I mean after Toms tune up, a guy was try it out, and man, He was cutting right thru bronze rings and all, I had enough fun there in an hour and 40 min.to last for a week.
