If all that is true, Al, why did you sell me the Orion last summer at Cashmere?  It had your DNA all over it and you let it slip through your fingers.  How many times are you going to do this before you put the snatch-a-tater on one for yourself?  Of course, the really good one's have to come with the Corona frame!  :-)

I didn't know you had DNA equipment still.  Its true, I tend to like every Orion that I get into my grasp.   But I also like the banjos I have.  Its a conundrum.

Hey there Lee.  Here's hoping the health issues get better for you.  Congrats on the anniversary and your 78th birthday too.  I'm thinking of taking my Nuvo down to the Nechville shop (150 miles south of me) to have them re-drill the peg head for the five string "all five strings to the head" configuration.  I want to have the middle G string peg moved from the top of the peghead (see the photo) to the middle of that inlay on the peghead.  It would look more natural to me, and I'm sure it wouldn't hurt the sound one bit.  I'd have the hole (above the word Necvil) plugged and hopefully inlay the word "The" where the plug is so it reads "The Necvil".    It may (or may not) happen.

Hey there Lee.  Yes - - he is still picking banjo.  He's got several really good CD's out.  I bought a couple of them the last time he was in the area for a weekend workshop.  He picks with some folks from the Mnpls/ St/Paul area.  I think he still lives in Iowa.  Here's a tune off of his Ladies on the Steamboat CD.

I never thought about getting "rid of it".  This is one banjo that's a keeper, and one that'll kick those bottom notes right back into your gut when you pick it.  It "ain't no Gibson Mastertone", but then again my Gibson Mastertone "ain't no Nechville".

There are a few tenors in the UK. I met a guy a few years back from Leicester but I can't remember his name. Different circles and all that, if I remember he played jazz. He came to meet Tom when he was over here. Also, Steve Noon of Eagle music bought one off Tom a couple of years back. Steve very definitely knows his banjos and he couldn't put it down once he'd played it. :-)

So I get to the Nechville booth at the Festival Of The Bluegrass in Lexington KY. last week and lo and behold there is Mike Mumford jamming with Jim Allen of Nechville along with some other talented guys. What a treat as one of my purposes was to be at Mike's banjo workshop. He was very personable and interesting. Jim Allen is a hoot and our wives hit it off.

Still  pickin  My  Nechville,  This  banjo is  a  keeper  for  life.  People  who have  never played,  or  heard, or  seen  a  Nechville  do  not  know  what  They  are  missing.   Change  action,,  change  tone  rings,,   change  heads,,   adjust  head  tension.  all  so  fast  it  is  almost  like  magic.   and  all  the  different  sounds You  can get.  I  can  tune Mine  up, haul  it  to  K.C.  take  it  out,  and is  always  in  tune,  I  think  mostly because  of  the Massive,  and  stable  bridge  Tom  makes.  and  the  neck  feels  better  than  ANY  banjo  I have ever  played.   just  a  joy  to  wrap Your  hand  around.      It;s  like  4  or  5  banjo's  in  one.  what  more  could  anyone  want?

I had the opportunity to check out a player's Zeus banjo at the Gettysburg Festival this pasty weekend.  Very nice, and lightweight too.  I'm really getting tired of polishing banjos, and as an avid tinkerer and experimenter, the parts interchangeability is attractive. My problem is not being able to play a few models side-by-side to hear the difference between models... and I can't quite get used to that Zeus peghead shape. Maybe in time. Very nice banjos.  Need to sell a few others to get one though.

Keith, check out the Saturn if you don't like the Zeuss peg head. Every time I pick mine up to practice I get this big goofy grin on my face. Light weight, great sound and so easy to change anything at the drop of a hat. I am absolutely crazy happy with the radius fingerboard too. I sure do not miss the weight of my Deering Golden Era around my neck and shoulders.

Tom Nechville or Al Price - I recently learned that the Moonshine EX is available with a Tuba-Phone style tone ring and a Press-On Plate Style Resonator. How does the resonator attach? I realize this is a few months out, but will you have one at SPBGMA? Does anyone have one in the Middle Tennessee area? Thanks for any info you can furnish. I had a chance to stop by the Nechville Shop in Minnesota a few weeks back.  My wife and I received a great tour and I got to pick some of those Nechville's.  Tom spent some time with us, and he set up a monster for me, just the way I would want.  He nailed it.

I cannot say enough about all the people at Nechville.  And the banjos are amazing.

I  may  not  play  banjo  every  day, But  when  I  do,  I  play  Nechville.    Stay  Thirsty  My  Friend.   Just  joking.  I  have  not been  playing  much  now.  Wife  in  nursing  Home,  She  had  a  bad  fall  and  was  sent  to  hospital   Wed.  morn.   came  back  today.  this  has  really  set  Her  back   very much.  She  can  not  stand  up  anymore,  and  constant  neck,  and  head  pain.  BUT  The  Lord  answers  Prayer.  I   beleave  She  will  be  back  home  soon,  and  playing  guitar  along  with  Me on  Nechville  Banjo.   When  Better  banjos  are  built   They  will  Be  Built  By  Nechville.

When I went looking for my first higher end banjo, I visited Turtle hill and played a bunch of banjos. I ruled out a lot of brands. At the time i ruled out even trying a Nechville because I thought it was too radical looking. Well, 6 years later I bought a Nechville Leon Hunt model with wood tone ring etc. It is now my number 1 banjo because it sounds fantastic and its so light weight. But here is the best story. i sent it on bagage on Southwest airlines to take it with me to the beach. When it arrived the action was all screwed up. i watched Tom's video on you tube about adjusting the neck and within minutes I had the action just right again. Try that with any other brand. True story. You don't even neeed experiance to correct the setup on a nechville. That is innovation that makes sense.

I bought a Tranjo for travel....although it was a neat little instrument, it was not quite enough banjo for me and I have since sold it. I was wondering how the Atlas would be for travel...does the neck remove easily to make it more compact for airline carry on? Thanks, Rick

Atlas or Moonshine would both seem to work fine for you. I play a Moonshine and a Saturn and can't imagine playing anything else. Tom and Al went through both banjos at Wintergrass and after a little magic hands time with Tom my Saturn was better than ever. I can now play licks at the speed of sound and leap short banjo cases in a single bound. Still haven't tried catching a speeding bullet but I did catch a falling finger pick once upon a time.

Hi Rick

I think it would be wrong to say that Nechville banjos are travel banjos like the Tranjo. However, when Tom visits the UK he frequently arrives with disassembled banjos in his luggage. I have watched him re-assemble his banjos within minutes of arriving in his hotel room, they're frequently still in tune (or very close) after he re-assembles them. This is because the Price tailpiece is only held in place by the tension of the strings and Tom doesn't usually bother to un-tension the strings when he whips the neck off.

I don't travel on aircraft very often and even less frequently with my banjo but having seen Tom do this trick a number of times I would happily do it myself and I think I would be happier doing it than trusting my luck to putting the banjo in the hold.

I love my Nuvo, but I don't fly so I don't get a chance to take

it apart to put it in a suitcase and in an overhead storage area

Hiya, Rick -- Both pieces should fit rather nicely in a suitcase.  Hey, if I can pop the pieces apart and plunk them back together, so can you.  You might want a hardshell rollaway to help protect the pot.  I asked Al Price about travelling with a Nechville, he puts the neck in a tube, you can use clothes to cushion it in the tube, and pack clothes in the pot.  I think he also advised me to use a layer of bubble wrap around the pot.

(Nonethess, I recently got a Tranjo -- when we travel by car on family trips, the station wagon is so full of everyone else's stuff, no room for a full-sized banjo, helps that the Tranjo is so flat, can just toss it on top of everyone else's gear.)

It  will  help  Me  keep  My  mind  off  My  loss  to  some  degree.    THANKS  To  all  who  prayed   for  My  Wife. You  all  are  good   people.   again  THANKS  Much.
