Thanks for the suggestion, Al.  I met up with Mike Munford this morning to do the setup and it sounds and feels wonderful now. The banjo sounded better in his hands than it ever will in mine (have you seen the videos on YouTube of him with his band "Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen"?) but I am definitely happy with the results. If anyone is in the MD-PA area, Mike is a true pro and a heck of a nice guy as well.

I ordered a new Nechville archtop tone ring from Tom recently, and it arrived today. It took me exactly 21 minutes to remove the flathead ring, put in the new archtop ring,  a new medium crown Remo white head, and tighten the head down to "A". I immediately shot this unedited, unrehearsed set of clips. What a cannon, for big outdoor jams! Sorry that my microphone clipped a little...I wasn't expecting so much volume! These are just the old strings, as I didn't take time to replace them.

The model is the XXV Phantom (25th anniversary model).

I didn't know Tom N. made archtop rings.  News to me!

Yes, Tom Nechville just started offering raised head rings recently. I thought that I remembered Al Price mentioning it somewhere, so I contacted Tom, and found that to be true.

Joe, I don't play from tab. The first "song" was just playing around with some back up licks over a I, IV, V progression. Just common variations of the "six white horses",  "in the mood", and "teardrop" licks. I was just playing them slowly, to get a feel for how the banjo sounded.

Bill The initial Excelsior prototypes were such a success, that I decided to start a production run of  new Excelsior bodies. While they are not yet prominently featured on our website, You can reserve an Excelsior Heli-mount for use with any of our necks or custom builds.  Most of them are being slated for a new model that I am currently working on called the "XXX", roughly marking with my 30th year of building banjos. Availability is still at least a year out, but I already have most of the specs planned.  Black Chrome Excelsior frame, Matching super-fine Gotoh tuners with Amber buttons, Old reclaimed 150 + year old maple rims, Press on - Pop off resonators, Mahogany necks with Rosewood fingerboards, There will be a few more surprises to boot. I can't wait. These frames are classy, stout and smooth with glistening finishes and ultimate projection of tone purity. How's that for horn blowing?

I don't get off the river for almost two more weeks. The new banjo was delivered. My wife likes it. My brother picked on it an gives it a thumbs up on sound and looks. Tom likes it. Jeremiah says he loves it. Al wants me to post sound or videos. And here I am on the Mississippi northbound below Tunica MS. I am thankful today for my supportive wife and friends and to be able to make a living doing what I love. However I really want to get my paws on that new banjo.
It'll have to share time with Moonshine redo and of course Roz, that's my wife. She has gotten used to being second when I referance things I love. It wasn't easy at first but she gets a smile when I remember to move her up on the totem pole. It's fun learning a song in Scruggs style and then frailing it and vice versa. The wider neck and taller bridge are a big plus for me. Nechville banjo's are the best in my opinion and I have had no qualms what so ever ordering something different from Tom. He has proven without a doubt that he can and will deliver nothing but the

best.

So I am also thankful to Tom Nechville for his unwavering commitment to high quality standards.

I love my new Nechville. What a sweet-heart! I really like that old time Whyte Laydie sound which can be used for picking also. I like the flat fingerboard with wider spacing for frailing. It has the same profile on the back of the neck as my Radiused Moonshine neck which has the best feel for me I have ever felt. Very smooth and easy to get around on. Easy adjustment of string height of course with the Flux Capacitor. Ya can't go wrong with a Nechville banjo Either a Heli-Mount or a Hybrid.

Just a shout-out to Tom N., who at Wintergrass graciously adjusted the neck and tightened up the head of my Nechville Classic.  (Wow, Renaissance head up to nearly 93 on the drum dial to go with the titanium-topped wood ring, I was too chicken to go up that high.)  Plays easier and sounds better than ever!

Those Ren heads needs a little more tension to find their  sweet spot.  And then they stretch out and need retightening once in awhile.   But when they're right, they sound great!

Just sittin in a barge fleet playin the whyte laydie. I was noticing all the little extra work that went into it. Mr. Nechville had lathed a bevel into the inside of the rim to enhance the sound. It sure did the trick! Alot of hours went into this Jo and for the price makes this an outstanding value. I understand there are tubaphones being built also. I really love playing Nechvilles. The neck profile is smooth as butter and just feels right to me.

I finally  got  back  on  the  H.O.   I'm  still  pickin  on  My  Wood   tone  ringed  Classic  Deluxe,  still  sounding   great.   I am  surprised  how  many  pickers   who  have  never seen a  Nechville  before.  I  have  just  about  wore  out  My  resonator  lugs  from  taking  it off.   when  people  want  to  see  how  it  works.  I  just  put  in  the  wrenches  and  loosen  the  head  about  a  1/2  inch,  then  tighten  back  up.   They  get  the  message.

What kinds of strings do you all put on your nechville, gauge and brand? Just curious. I'd like to get a bit of a brighter tone out of my nechville phantom, I do have the head tightened, I thought maybe lighter gauge strings would do it. Right now I have ghs pf155's (10, 11, 12 1/2, 20, 10).

I use AMB cryos on all my banjos.  

The gauges are 11/ 13/ 15/ 24w/ 12.

That works for all the banjos here, except for the ODE D.  For some reason it seems a bit too much for the ODE, so when I change strings on it, I'll have to think of what will work best for it.  But on the Nechville Nuvo they sound really good.  For me - - heavier strings will get a brighter tone.  But don't quote me on that.  My Nuvo is maple, and I have the head cranked pretty tight too.  Even with the fifth string being a 12 (and it goes all the way to the peg head with no fifth string peg), I can tune it up a full five frets to the G note found on 5 string banjos.  The AMB cryo strings are really good.  They don't cost much either, and you can make up your own set for the gauges you prefer.  Good luck, eh?

A Nechville Flextone is a banjo that has a traditional pot with a modern Nechville neck, tailpiece, bridge and armrest. That way you have some of the playability, convenience and comfort of a modern Nechville with the tone of a traditional banjo which balances very nicely. My banjo is modeled with some of my favorite gibson features.

I've used the GHS PF150s for years, 10-12-14-22-10, but recently switched over to the John Hartford (John Pearse) 1900L strings- same gauge but a brighter sound to my ear.  Its shouldn't make a difference, but it seems to anyway.

Those Orions are great!  If I were getting a new banjo, that'd be it.  I have had my eye on several over the years, trying to sell a banjo to buy it, and well, sold it to someone else.  It just happened again at Merlefest.
