There was some awesome jams at the Nechville booth during the Winter Bluegrass weekend festival! Tom Nechville set my banjo up, and now it sounds like a whole new instrument! I love it! Thank you so much Tom!

What are We doing way down here for? One of the finest banjo's built today, Try one You Will Like It, I would buy two more if the money was there, But it isn;t right now. BUT someday Wow.
last Sunday I picked some Nechville Tone, (Amazing Grace), and a gospel tune I wrote, no one Knew the second tune, but seemed to like it. (Theres A Place In The Vally In The Wildwoods The Little Brown Church In The Dell) Nothing as Good as Being at Church, unless You are pickin at Church (What A Day That Will Be, When My Savior I Will See, When I Look Upon HIS Face, The ONE Who Saved Me By HIS Grace, Then HE Will Take Me By The Hand, Lead Me to The Promised Land) How Good It Is.
What string gauges are you folks using for your Nechvilles? I'm curious.
Am curious because I'm used to using the AMB "heavy mediums". .11/ .13/ .15/ .24w/ .12 That configuration works well on my Gibson and GTR. On the other hand - - it seems a bit "much" on the Nuvo with the radiused fingerboard. I don't have to work as hard to "pull tone" from the Nuvo, like I have to do with the other two.
I haven't used lighter gauged strings for several decades. Would those be easier to pick? I've been experimenting with the Heli-mount setup, and I can get different tones out of the Nuvo. Do lighter gauged strings work better with the Heli-mount and radiused fretboard? The strings I'm using now seem to "overpower" the Nuvo. I'd like something more responsive. Something to bring out the sound without sounding so (almost) abrasive.
Any and all suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks in advance.
dmiller, I'm not sure if the GHS mediums are used on all of the models, but when I had a neck change made, that's what Tom put on my Classic. GHS Strings: .010, .012, .014, .022, .010 Maybe Tom will respond to let you know what he has found works best on your model.
Dave and Dave, that's what we put on very banjo. Lighter strings can be used, but you <may> need to raise that action a wee bit to accommodate additional vibration.
Dave and Al - - - thanks for the gauge suggestions. I'm (slowly but surely) learning how to "dial in the strings". I'm happier tonight (than I was yesterday) with the sound I'm getting. I'm not a big fan of GHS strings. My next order to AMB for my next set of cryos will be for the gauges suggested. Thanks!
I have tred a few different kind of string, They all sound good on My Nechville, Medium gage, I do nt go lighter than that. Right now I have a set of Vega's on It, Next week I;m going with GHS, Or DR. Any name string sound great, But no lights.
Pickin at Church today, AND Some Great Sunday School, And Preaching Of Gods Word. All Is Well With My Soul, and My Nechville is doing pretty Well also.
Our band played a gospel sing last night. Had a great time and like Lee says, "The Nechville was popping, zinging, 4th string booming, so easy to play and light on the shoulder.
Nechville uninitiated question here, with that neck attachment, is it possible to switch pots and use the same neck? What I have in mind would be the Atlas neck on both the Atlas pot and a saturn pot, for switching back between openback and resonated BG styleplay. Possible?

Hey there Debbie - - - You could get the (regular) tuners and replace the ones that are on your phantom. The only problem I can think of would be the size of the hole for the peg shaft to go through. The size of the pegs on the phantom look to be pretty much the same size as other (regular) banjo pegs. Maybe Al Price or Tom could comment on this? Their answer would be a lot more definitive than mine.
If you DO go for the Keith Scruggs tuners - - get all 4! I've got 4 of them on my Gibson, and they are a whole lot of fun to pick on/ with. I'd take them off of the Gibson and put them on my Nechville, but they are chrome, and the Nechville is gold.

Has anyone installed D-tuners on a Phantom? I love my Phantom ...I've had it about two years. Its phenomenal.
However, I want to put d-tuners on it. I was thinking those nifty Apollo's might work ...maybe?

Sundance - - - Given the configuration of the Phantom's tuning pegs, I'm thinking the Apollos won't work. Maybe they could, but looking at the Apollos and then the way the Phantom tuners are placed, I kind of doubt it. I don't think they will work on my Nuvo either, since all five strings go straight to the peg head and the middle G string runs straight up the middle of the peg head.
If you want to do D-tuners (given the banjo you have), I'd think that the Keith tuners would be the way to go. I've got 4 Keith tuners on my Gibson that I've wanted to transfer to the Nechville, but they're chrome and the Nechville has gold hardware. As long as the peg shaft of the Keith tuners is the same size as the tuners already on the Nechville, it would be a cinch to put them in in no time flat. I have an older set of Keiths (just the two of them) that I bought back in 1971 (thereabouts), and they still work perfectly these 40 years later.
Maybe I'll get ambitiious and take off one of my tuners from the Nechville and replace it with one of the Keith's (in the "interest of science") to figure out if they fit or not.
(edited to add - - -) dpete is right. Call the Nechville office. You'd get a definitive answer from any of them.
After talking to Nechville, the best way to do this is to replace my tuners altogether. Its not cheap, but I'm going to replace them with Keith D tuners on the 2nd and 3rd and regular Keith tuners on the other three. All in stainless with Amber buttons; not that its important , but I think this will look good.
I really did dig the guitar tuners on the phantom though. Ah well.

I am taking My (Athenafied) Classic Deluxe to a Jam tonight, and My 52 year old Gibson Flat--Top Guitar. Should be a great night, If We don't have a tornado or damaging winds. They are predicting all this around midnight, I'll be home by then, I hope.
Happy Easter to all, Pickin at church for Easter (THE SCARLET PURPLE ROBE)----a Stanly Brothers tune. It's always great to worship Jesus with song, and preaching of the Word. My Nechville Is still putting out some good tone. I like it. Better get ready for church now.
I'm still debating on whether or not to put D-tuners on my banjo. I like the sound they get on some songs, but I hear sometimes it makes it hard to tune. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm....... I don't know.

The Timara StringDrops don't effect tuning at all. Once they're set they're set. You can change strings and they'll still detune and retune with very minimal (if any) tweaking.
I've got 4 of them on my Gibson, and they are a whole lot of fun to pick on/ with. I'd take them off of the Gibson and put them on my Nechville, but they are chrome, and the Nechville is gold.
