did anyone go to that nechville banjo event?

Tedd and I put on several intimate jams and workshops the past few days. Wavy Dave Keith Bauman,Ryan Fisher, And a bunch of people showed up, Toronto was good, but most of my events in the south have been small. Scott Woody joined Henri Deschamp and us for an awesome jam at the Mast farm inn. Box from Tennessee Sounds in Kingston brought in a good size group. We had a great time with Bobby Degiosi and John Sawyer at Zepps. If nothing else we have reinforced some friendships and spread the understanding of Nechville a bit further. thanks to everyone who showed up. I hope your banjos are all sounding better.

Tom (Nechville), I offer a couple of suggestions for your web page.  I recently bought a turbo module for my Classic from a BHO member that I plan to use with a blues/country/rock band I play in.  There were no instructions that came with the unit and the fellow I purchased the module from couldn't remember if he received instructions with the unit.  I called the shop to get a few questions answered.  Installing the module isn't rocket science but I was not sure if the rim was supposed to accompany the ring and I had put the rim back in.  It worked fine, but I removed the rim after finding out it wasn't necessary.  So my first suggestion is to put instructions on the Nechville web page where the module is shown to aid folks who, for what ever reason, don't have the turbo module installation instructions because they purchased used or lost them.  Another handy bit of information that you could include is to explain what the knob functions are for the 3 knobs on the module.    http://www.nechville.com/images/electric/h_turboModule.jpg

I have also found that I need a taller bridge with the turbo module installed.  Because the small head surface where the bridge rests is lower than where an acoustic head sits, I discovered I had to use a taller bridge to eliminate string buzz. While I could adjust the neck, I don't want to disturb where it is set for when I switch back to the acoustic set up, so a taller bridge saves that step for the switchback.  So perhaps on the same page advertising the turbo module you could put something there about  ordering a taller bridge if a person doesn't want to change the neck position for the acoustic set up.  I have built up one of my extra Enterprise bridges to take care of the added height I need, so I've solved the buzzing I was getting up the neck with the turbo module set up.  But my thought is that someone contemplating purchasing a module, whether new or used, may not be aware of some of the "little things" relative to the "electric" set up.

For those of you who may be contemplating a turbo model or one of the electric models, let me just say that I've been having fun playing my Classic through an acoustic amp and adding effects like echo, reverb, etc.  It adds a whole new dimension and possibilities to songs.  Diehard bluegrass folks probably won't be interested in those possibilities, but for those of us who aren't strapped to one style of music, the turbo module or the electric models available open up  a new world.       The turbo module is a terrific option!  Good job Nechville!

dpete210 - - - So YOU'RE the one who got that turbo module just as I was getting ready to buy it!

I was one day behind you with the emails to the seller.  I KNEW I should have acted faster.  angry

Hey - - - congrats on the buy.  smiley  It would've been fun to have and experiment with.

If you decide you want to sell it . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .???   cool

dpete210 - Posted - 05/01/2011:  12:59:29

Dave M.,   I considered getting a turbo module in the past but there were other things that took priority.  When I saw the module come up for sale I hesitated but then finally made the decision to give it a try, and it sounds like it was a good thing I didn't wait any longer than I did.    I hope you get the chance to add a module to your Nechville.  So far it seems that it sounds better through an acoustic amp, although I've only played it through a couple of my acoustic amps and a non acoustic of a band mate's.  Haven't run it through the band's sound system yet, but it should work just fine since I'll use my acoustic amp as a monitor.

I envy the folks at the Nechville shop - they just have too much fun making banjos and then  test driving them!  smiley

Dave, I took a Meteor one day to the local Guitar Center and played it through every amp they had. No question, the acoustic amps gave the cleanest sound. I found a Roland I liked so much that day that I bought it.

I bought a new Phantom a couple of weeks ago from the good folks at Vick's Guitar Cave in Forest Grove Oregon.  I've been playing a Deering Calico for a couple of years (I will always love it) but the Nechville is really nice.  I'm finding the radiused fret board very much to my liking and the adjustability of these Nechvilles is really impressive.  Nice work Nechville!

Ha!!   Me too with my (old-but-new-to-me) Nuvo.  I've only picked up the Gibson and the GTR once or twice since I got this Nechville 6 months ago and that was only to compare the flat fingerboards on the other two, versus the radiused of the Nuvo.   Well - - also to compare the tone/ sound/ as well as the playability.  All three are good banjos, but hands down the Nechville is my favourite.  It's got "punch"/ volume/ and tone that the others can't equal.  cool

The one thing I'm NOT really fond of on mine (and this won't be an issue for most Nechville owners), is the sliding capo it has and the occassional need to change strings.  It's difficult to change strings easily with this capo, but that's the nature of the beast (I guess).  Here's a picture of the capo riding on it's rail system built into the neck for those who don't know what I'm talking about:

That little rubber O-ring (on both sides of the capo) holds it down so securely, that it takes one hand to lift the capo enough to slide a new string under it.  I've changed strings on this already and found the best way to change strings quicker, was to take a pair of needle nose pliers/ remove the O-ring/ and the top part of the capo comes off making string changes much easier.

I keep one of those Swiss Army Tools (like a Leatherman) with the needle nose pliers in the center of it in the banjo case for just this purpose.  As I said, that is my one and ONLY complaint (such as it is) about the Nuvo.  On the upside - - since I use Tom Mirasola's American Made Banjo Cryogenic strings exclusively, I can go for MONTHS between string changes. approve approve

So - - - My "problem" with it isn't really a "problem" after all.  wink

I absolutely love my Nechville!  I've personly tried Deering's, Huber's, Bishline's, Stelling's, and old Gibson's, and I have yet to find a banjo that fits me better then this one (though I don't think I will)!  It sounds fantastic, and I think looks just as well!

Hi Lee,

I love your posts about your nechville banjo and how much you love them.  I'm curious if you own any other banjos and what banjos you've owned in the past.  I just started playing a little over a year ago and got a gold star gf-85 to start then bought a nechville maple galaxy phantom from turtle hill last october.  I kind of switch playing the banjos but I've been giving the nechville a lot more playing time then my goldstar lately.  I actually think I hear the banjo opening up a lot and I'm really enjoying the tone and the feel of it.  I didn't know that banjo's opened up with playing, I've played guitars for a number of years and I know that acoustic guitars really open up with time and playing, I've just been pleasantly surprised with the Nechville

happy pickin,

Debbie

I just met Tom last weekend at the Banjoree in Hagen, Germany.  I was thoroughly impressed with both the man and his machines.  You couldn't meet a nicer guy, and you couldn't play a nicer, more well thought-out, great sounding instrument.

Unfortunately, Lluis Gomez was also at Banjoree, and after hearing and watching him for a whole weekend, I don't think I'm worth of a Nechville.  Lluis may be one of the most gifted banjo players on the planet.  He's truly astonishing.  Unbelievable.  Wonderful.  Incredible.  And modest and friendly, too.

Two great people to meet, and I'm glad I met them.

Now, everyone go out and buy a Nechville and a Lluis Gomez CD, because they both deserve a lot of attention and money and all things good.

God i'd love a Nechville [mahogany classic].....its all the banjo i'd ever need. However as i have no wealthy relatives and a blue collar job [with 2 kids, one on the way] i'll have to hold that thought for a decade or two.

I'll say it again though, i'd LOVE Nechville.

I recently had to take a bit of a banjo break to focus on research and coursework for the last month or so of the semester.

Just this week I got to pull out my Nechville Galaxy Phantom and get back to pickin' and although I'm a bit rusty, it still sounds like a dream, and felt just perfect in my hands.  Fits like a glove.  I still think my Nechville was worth every penny.

Men and women of banjo, it's great to see the Nechville thread alive and well. In Paris waiting for a train to see my daughter and French family in Alsace. I gave my first banjo workshop in French the other day with Jean-Marie Redon. It was great. We met with prewar collectors last night and played each others banjos. I'm glad I offer a choice of sound. Was fun to try the collector banjos and satisfying to be able to help improve them in some cases and to experience a jam where there was nothing lacking in the sonic power of the Nechville.

Hey Tom, sorry to ask you directly but in your opinion which Nechville best measures up to the term 'dry, hollow sound'?

I have a bunch of maple banjos and one mahogany, i am minded that the mahogany banjo is closer in terms of 'dry and hollow' but i'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on it. From what little i have been able to glean without actually playing one, i would have probably thought the mahogany classic [i like conservative pegheads] would suit my needs best.

Thanks in advance.

Frank for what it's worth I have a maple and a mahogany Nechville.

I love the both but my band members and one fan in particular likes the mahogany more.

I don't think there's "that" much difference but there is a difference.

My best take on it is the maple has a bit more bite, but like I said I love them both.

Hey Lee,

I have the nechville maple phantom that has the heavier tonering, what's the ring I need for it to make it lighter?  That is pretty easy to put in, correct?  That's the beauty of the nechvilles.

thanks,

Debbie

dpete210 - Posted - 06/04/2011:  19:02:21

Debbiej, you directed your question to Lee so sorry  for butting in.  I have a  Nechville wooden ring to use in my Classic.  I bought it mostly out of curiosity and because I was so impressed with the Deering Hartford which has a grenadillo ( a wood used to make marimbas) ring.   You can get  a little info here:

nechville.com/customOptions.php                It is under the tone ring options list as TimbrTronic

You simply replace the metal ring with the wooden ring.  Same process as if you were putting in or taking out the metal ring.  Another option is to use the delrin "tone spheres,"  also listed on that same page, which help to further lighten the banjo. Or one can use a combination of the delrin and steel spheres.  I have tried several combinations and have been using a half and half blend with either the wooden or steel ring.  It is easy to experiment.

Debbiej - Posted - 06/04/2011:  19:47:37

Hi Pete,

What did the wooden tone ring do to the tone of the banjo and what did the delrin spheres do for the tone?   Also was/is your banjo about 2 or 3 pounds lighter with these changes?

thanks,

Debbie

pick1936 - Posted - 06/05/2011:  06:11:59

Mine  weighs  7 lbs.  on  digital  bathroom  scales, I  do  not have the  bronze  ring  now,  I  traded   it  in  for  the  Coco--wood  ring.  I  use  only  the steel  balls,  with  80  steel  balls  pushing  tightly against  the  wood  ring  gives  it  a  Good Mettalic  tone, I really   like  it,  Sounds  Great.

Debbie,  it is hard to describe tone.  First of all, Lee mentioned the lesser weight.  With the delrin spheres and wooden ring my banjo feels feather light to me. I've never weighed it, but I'd guess it is a bit lighter than Lee's since he uses the steel balls.  I use a half and half blend of the delrin and steel balls.  When I used all delrin with the wooden ring I was amazed at how light the banjo felt.  The half and half combo does not add much weight.  Experimentation would be the best way to determine what works best.  As far as tone goes, I like the tone. If I were to describe the tone, I'd say it sounds mellower and to my ear gives a bassier or more "growl" to the lower strings, but not at the expense of volume.   I keep my banjo head at about a G# (90 on a drum dial) . I  like the tone I get with the metal ring and use the metal ring more often than the wooden.  Every once in awhile I like to switch to the wooden ring and currently have the wooden ring in use.   However, for any one who is struggling with the weight issue of a metal ring banjo, the wooden ring and delrin spheres will, I believe, revitalize one's love for playing banjo and be very kind to any physical problems one may have.   As far as volume, the wooden ring and either the steel or delrin spheres or a combination produce a volume that is plenty loud.  I have never really paid much attention to whether or not their is a loudness loss with the wooden ring because I am not a subscriber to the louder is better school of thought.  I am more interested in what I consider a pleasing musical sound, which either the metal or wooden ring in a Nechville give.  In summary, the tone of the delrin spheres and wooden ring while different from the metal ring is very pleasing to my ear.   I don't want to speak for Tom or anyone at the Nechville shop, but I believe as an owner of a Nechville product you will get a repeat customer discount if you were to purchase a wooden ring and the delrin spheres.  It would be worth a phone call or email to find out what to expect.  I can't tell you if you will be pleased with the tone because tone is so subjective.  I don't hear a radical difference between the wooden and metal rings.  Different, yes.   If you are concerned about lessening the weight and avoiding a loss of volume, I believe you will be well pleased with the wooden ring possibilities.

fwiw, my experiences with the wood tone rings have been very positive. Like Dave, my interest is in tone and not so much volume/loudness.

My maple phantom has a cocobolo tonering and all steel spheres. I have not changed or altered the setup since I received it from Tom and crew. It's setup is perfect for stuff I like to play on this particular banjo. The banjo has as a mellow, very round tone. Head is around a G.

Another option worth looking into is the wood ring w/titanium cap. I have this on my maple nextar with mixture of steel and derlin spheres (8 I think). I found this combination gave me an very traditional tone: full round tone, clear mids w/o overpowering treble. Even response up and down, good separation and presence. I like this ring quite a bit. Originally this banjo had a metal 10 hole and is 'electified' from time to time i.e. turbo module.

As Dave mentioned, experimenting would be best way to find the setup that sounds best to you. I mark the optimal settings w/piece of tape on the inner tension ring, so it's very easy to experiment w/o losing your setup info. I've found  that mixing derlin spheres with steel, allowed me to fine tune the tone. Where for me increasing the ratio of derlin to steel, had the effect of filtering down the ring and treble. As I understand it, the ceramic spheres, all other things being equal have effect somewhere between steel and derlin.

I just noticed on the Nechville site, the XXV helimount anniversary limited edition Phantom announcement. How about some teaser photos guys?

All the best,

Wayne

I would also like to see this awesome banjo!  Anniversary edition banjos are really nice.  Where's Tom right now in his travels?

Is there a list somewhere of every option you can have with the nechville with the different spheres, tone rings, caps etc.?  Also what they should do for the tone.

thanks,

Debbie

I saw Bela Fleck and the Flecktones last Saturday and bela came out for the second set with a beautiful white electric wireless nechville. It was stunning and the tone was jaw dropping. Nice work nechville that is one amazing banjo.

Hi Debbie,  I  think  You can  get  following  tone  rings.--bronze.--  Cocobolo---ebony.--- titanium  caps, and  maybe  more?   Steel--delrin--cermamic,  maybe  more?    I  have  used  nothing  but  steel  ball  and  Coco---wood  ring.  Very  very  light,  and  great  volume, and  Tone.  My  theory  like  stated  before,   80  steel   balls  pushing  on  wood  tone  ring. Result---Mettalic, great   tone.  I  may  order  some  Delrin   balls  later  to  try,  but  do  not  see  how  it  could  get  any  better,  Could  get  scary.    anyway  You  can  not  go  wrong  with  Toms  banjo's.   just  My  opinion, there  are  some  on  here  who  have  tried  more  combo's  than  I  have.  Keep  checking  with  others, AND  If  You get  the  chance  anytime  to  pick  someone's  Nechville   try  them.

Debbie,  we have a custom options page on the web site that you can find in the "Acoustic Banjos" menu.   AS for their effect on the tone, we have a multimedia page with audio and video clips for many of those options.  You can hear for yourself that way.
