OK.....I've read all 44 pages......I really want a vintage with the flying eagle inlay...although a classic deluxe with cocobolo rim or athena.........looks sexy....I get the feeling if I asked Mr Kelso he might recommend I get a Nechville....but I'm not totally sure....
anybody consider trading a nechville banjo for my guitar.....bourgeois madagascar rosewood/adirondack top DB signature OM...?

I am running real slow today, BUT after I take a shower, I'm taking My (Athenafied) Classic Deluxe to Bluegrass festival at Clinton, Mo. I should get there about 3:00 pm, anyone wanting to play,, See how the adjutability,, and how great it sounds. LOL you might just be right about Lee.. I hear that he sorta likes Nechville. :)
Of course I can't blame him.. I've never had a new-from-the-factory banjo before.. and I have to tell ya... they need breaking in... I've allready had to tighen the head and adjust my bridge 3 times.... If this were a conventional banjo, I would be going out of my mind with all of the hooks, bolts, and tensioning problems... but with the nechville it takes about 10 minutes, and is sorta fun. :)
As soon as it IS broken in, I can't wait to play around with different head tensions... I'll mark my favorites on the rim so I can adjust back to them in a flash. :)
No other banjo has the sheer possibilities that the Nechville does... with my banjos of the past, I might try replacing the tailpiece, or bridge... spend an entire evening adjusting the head, etc... if I didn't like the result.. it was an 8 hour mistake, and sometimes a $100 mistake... Sorta seems like other banjos just sorta sound the way they sound... and there's not too much you can do about it... The Nechville is great because it can change with your moods.
I'm sorta thinking about ordering a titanium topped tone ring next.. I love the lightweight wood... :)

I've already tightened the head and raised the action on my new Nechville. It was a breeze.
One of the most amazing things I have to report is that I can play an entire set, or even multiple sets, with my band and NOT RETUNE A STRING! Not one string all night! Once it's in tune, it stays in tune, capoed or not. I'm using a Shubb capo (for radiused fingerboard). I have always had to retune when I capo, and that is across two Gibsons, a Gold Star, a Stew-Mac, and two Imperials. I thought it was something I just had to accept.
I have to say that I am looking forward to playing this banjo so much more than my old workhorse Gibson, not only because of no tuning issues but also because it is so easy to play and sounds great. It's so even all up and down the neck and string-to-string. And it's not even close to broken in! Can't wait to play it on our next recording project.
Tom Nechville, you have truly revolutionized the banjo.

I played my maple gold plated with wreath inlay Nechville at an even recently and after we were through another picker (traditionalist) came up behind me looking over my shoulder to see what I had. I guess it sounded good to him? lol
But he wouldn't ask what it was.

What type of capo is best to use with that Vintage banjo?.....I understand the neck is slightly wider....will a standard capo for radius banjo work?......and what about a strap....I've got a couple of Huber straps that have sewn loops....I suspect they will not work on the nechville....I also have a dogwood strap adjustable with screws......I suspect it will work....

My favorite strap is the dogwood...but I've got it on an early 50's bowtie....I'll have to swap it for one of the huber straps and use the dogwood on my nechville......I also noticed that Janet Davis is selling an Elliot Capo list as "for Nechville".......I've got a shubb and paige radius....I think they should be fine...but anyone have one of the elliot's for nechville banjos?....I've got a flat elliot on my prewar huber (huber lancaster with prewar rim transplanted).....:-)

Trey, you can order an Elliott direct from Phill Elliott built specifically for the Vintage. You can get his number at eliottcapos.com. He'll want to know the width of the fingerboard at 4th fret.

I got a chance to play an Atlas at IBMA....in fact, I played it several times, and spent a lot of time at the Nechville booth.
Folks, this is a fantastic banjo. I was amazed at the volume and tone that came out of that open back. As usual, the neck plays as smooth as butter. If someone wants just one banjo, to play any type of music, I recommend the Atlas without reservation. You will have no problem being heard at a Bluegrass jam, yet it can be played softly by itself, and you can easily sing over it, as well.
You can forget about heavy rings and resonators with this banjo. It truly can do it all, yet feels as light as a feather.

Just a short note to You Nechville Guys, and others who have been praying for Me. I got home from Hospital Yesterday, I've still got a long way to go. The Drs, went in with scopes to get this growth on My adrenal gland, Then He decided He couldnt get it that way. so He Made bigger cut--- Dead Center of My belly. Then He had to go in with His hand, and gently manipulate it around untill The growth released and He was able to take it out. It was the size of a Pool Ball. It was attaching itself to My inestines, and part of My back. He said He had never seen anything like it. He said it was a big ball of blood, with a fibrus covering. Then three days later He came in and said did You feel those bullits fly right by Your ears? Then he said We thout You had cancer, BUt it was NON Cancer. made Me feel better, I wont be able to pick My Nechville for awhile, But I really want To THANK You guys for the prayers. Again THANKS Guys. ---- I am up more now, BUT still Can't pick the Nechville.---Wow just wait another couple weeks.---MAN Maybe another week yet?----Just gettin started again.

Hey I just finished a 5 pound banjo, but it doesn't have a resonator yet, but I love the sound, It has a clear head believe it or not, and it is very mellow, and clear and rich, It is a Plectrum, and I am going to make a special resonator for it and keep the weight under 6.

The TV show was done super pro. They took my rambling comments and edited some sense into them. They really got the message and reinforced the differences in design by clever camera work and editing. I will figure out how to make a link to this and post later.

That's a really great video! Those guys did a really fantastic job and it puts your radical concept of building banjos in a wonderfully easy to understand way. I think it also demonstrates your commitment to quality. I particularly like the banjo building race.
Lots of people get good ideas but relatively few people have the ability to take an idea and see it through to its logical conclusion. Even fewer have that extra something required to produce a lasting quality product, especially in a market where there are so many die hards who refuse to believe that a revolutinary new idea can be as good as or better than the accepted norm.
I also know that your imagination is still working away creating new ideas to make life better for the humble banjo player.

I finally got to pick My great (Athenafied) Classic Deluxe for about an hour today. Man it is so nice. I have this young family at Church, Three Girls, One is learning Mandolin, One Fiddle, One Guitar. They want to pick with Me and My banjo, some Old Hymn at Church, BUT I have to get with them a couple of times and practice. I'm Thinking Precious Memories,, Or Just a Closer Walk With Thee, have to find out whats good for them. It's great seeing a family band coming together. Settin Flat On Ready.
