A lady living not too far from me has bought one, same set up and everything, she's asked me to come over and play it for her. I never got round to playing Tony's so I'm really looking forward to it. Interestingly, Tony has a Nechville bridge on his banjo.

that's interesting about the bridge. I've thought of putting a compensated bridge on my deering. Of course, I've had mine since long before I knew what Nechville is. Your video is interesting if you ff to the two banjos. they're both good sounding banjos but very different. Greg Deering says that Jens Kruger went to a swiss bell factory to have the tone ring made. I actually used to work on handbells and have been to the Whitechapel foundry in London. Wonder if they'd make a tone ring.

I'm new to banjo playing, and before I discovered this website, I'd never heard of a Nechville banjo. I took a look around the Nechville website and at the videos. I think the design of your banjo is pure genius, and I intend to have one someday. As far as the styling goes, I tend to lean more towards a conventional peghead shape with a conventional 5th string tuner, but I really like the helimount system and the easy adjustability of the neck.

I intend to own one myself.. as always, Holdup is $$. Think about what you want though.. I've followed the Nechville's long enough to know they will customize anything for you. I hope I can get a tunneled 5th and couple other little ideas I have but until then I'll be saving and coming up with what I want.

btw I have played one.. it's pure comfort. I didn't like the way they looked but when I was in a roomful of banjos I kept going back to the Nechville.

Im regretting not buying a Nechville that Elderly had last week. I called and put it on HOLD, and another came up that I waited on and the one at Elderly sold after my hold was up

Just thought I'd pop in here and give a bit of a "review" regarding the Atlas I played at SMBA last weekend.

This particular Atlas is the "Cello-Banjo" version, ie, it is tuned an octave below standard (or in my case, an octave below "drop C"). This is one of those banjos that the more time I spent with it, the better it got. It plays so easily that you forget you're playing on some serious 'ropes' (it is strung with heavy nylon).

One of the things that happens with extremely low tunings is that the tone often gets muddied if you get much beyond single notes; chords really tend to sound awful, etc. This is why (partially) most bass players simply pound out root-fifth-root-fifth, etc. In the Atlas, Tom has really done an exemplary job of getting both good note seperation and smooth melding of chords. It still isn't something you're going to be using full 4-note chord positions on...but typical 3-note and 2-note chords do quite well.

The tone on the Atlas is very smooth and very 'woody' as opposed to most vintage CBs, which have a 'trashcan strung with bailing-wire' tone. The Gold Tone CB really does a nice job of getting better tone out but I think the Atlas is easily head and shoulders above that.

As I said, a CB for general jam work, is probably mostly about bass backup lines and root-fifth stuff...but I think with the Atlas, it is easy to start thinking about slow, atmospheric solos and other low tuning/rich overtone work. I think it would sound especially great in D (aDAF#D) or Gm (gDGBbD) or "Sawmill" (gDGCD).

For my part, I immediately cranked the 4th down to C and worked on a bit of classic fingerstyle. It has such a rich tonal pallette and such a big dynamic range that I went completely romantic on it with Weidt's "Cupid's Victory" (a waltz from the 1890's). I didn't know how well it would sound mic'd but Tom let me borrow it for the faculty concert and it did quite well, I got lots of good comments afterwards.

So, thanks to the Nechville folks for exploring your basser instincts! I think the Atlas is a hit!

nechvilles are some of the best playing/sounding banjos made today. they tend to have a more woody tone and are a little quieter than a mastertone style banjo but its very pleasing and banjolike.

i like theire more traditional looking banjos but thats just me, it has nothing to do with the way they sound or play.

My Timbr--Tronic Classic Deluxe is sounding better all the time, i was thinking about trying the Rosewood/ Titanium tone ring, BUT My Cocobolo Ring is getting better with age, I can get any sound I want, I can even get the Gibson sound, If I want,, I have it set right now, just like I want it, I can pick in a Jam, and pick real lightly, and blend in, Then just dig in a little more and take a break, It just don't get any better..---- Settin Flat On Ready.

I picked My Classy Classic Deluxe for three hours last night at the K.C. Jam, The neck is so good, It almost plays itself, What a great pickin party We had..---Wow.---- Update, This baby is really playing, and sounding Real Good. I had a wood tonering in my Classic DLX it it sounded great, I wanted to swap it out for a 40 hole like is in my walnut Phantom, no problem with the folks at Nechville, they sent me the new tonering and Mr. Hill who could not have been any kinder told me how to install it, it was a breeze, and I am loving the Maple sound , although there was something special about that wood tonering and it was lighter but I love the punch and the 4th string of this banjo now, Thank you guy's for going the extra mile to take care of your customers.

Had me a nice little play on an Atlas at the weekend. This one was strung up all conventional, standard tuning and steel strings. I have to tell you it was really sweet, if I'd had the dosh it would have had itself a new owner.

I'm not bothered about volume, not like some folks I could think of, but I was really surprised at how loud it was, I'm not talking in your face loud but there was plenty there for the asking. It meant you could lay right off it and it still projected well, not like a lot of clawhammer banjos I've played in the past.

I think Tom has surpassed my expectations yet again and I'm sure once more clawhammer banjo players try these, they will definitely be pleasantly surprised and there will be converts.

I almost forgot to mention how pretty it was and really light.

I would sure like to try out an 11 inch Atlas. Anyone know where the closest one to central Arkansas might be? Janet Davis doesn't have one for me to try out (she is 3.5 hrs. north of me). The Atlas great banjo, you get the warmth of the old time style or a great hollow wood sound for bluegrass. I like the block style pot, and the cut out for the thumb makes it really comfortable (I never realized how much my thumb hits the neck)!

i have a phantom neck and a tenor neck for my nechville as some of you know. i'd had the tenor neck on it for a few months and was kind of missing the sound of the 5 string nechville, so two nights ago i took out a stopwatch and decided to time just exactly how long it would take to change necks.

i picked up the tenor and played Ain't Misbehavin' then slacked the strings, took off the tailpiece and bridge, unscrewed the tenor neck. reversed the order with the 5 string neck and played Maple Leaf Rag on the 5 string. total time between songs- 7 minutes and 32 seconds.

granted i had marked on the head where the bridge needs to sit so bridge placement only took a few minor tweaks. the biggest time spent in the process is putting the strings on the tailpiece and that isn't much. i considered putting a piece of masking tape on the tailpiece to speed it along a bit but it's not a lot of time spent on it.

anyway, the point is, total time to change necks and play a song- 7 minutes 32 seconds!

Played my Vintage yesterday at a cookout for over two solid hours in the 90+ degree heat and had to re-tune zero times.

I recently tweaked the head up to G# and she sure sounded fine!
